CALI DREAM, MOBIL SOLUTION TAKE HOME STAKES TROPHIES
IN PAY THE MAN AND GOVERNOR’S BUCKEYE CUP
In stakes action Saturday at JACK Thistledown Racino, Cali Dream got a perfect trip under jockey Luis Quinones to score her first black type win, taking the Pay the Man Stakes, and Mobil Solution and jockey Luis Rivera got the best of a three-way surge to the wire in the Governor’s Buckeye Cup.
Registered Ohio foals 3 years old and up contested both races, with the Pay the Man restricted to fillies and mares. Each race offered a $75,000 purse.
Quinones urged Cali Dream out of the gate from her outside post to avoid being caught wide on the first turn and then settled outside in third. She relaxed behind the slow pace set first by Hey Adrian in :23.60 and :49.20 and then by pace-chaser Totally Obsessed in 1:14.08. Cali Dream made her bid nearing the final turn, took the lead into the stretch and finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1:54.86. Long shot Grizabella was second, 1 1/2 lengths clear of favored Takechargedelilah in third.
“I took the blinkers off today,” said winning trainer Gary Johnson. “She’s been real competitive, but if she had the lead she’d start looking around and she was hanging a little bit on the turn. So I was thinking if I took the blinkers off she’d go on with it and she did.” Off at 9-2, Cali Dream paid $11, $5.20 and $2.80.
A 5-year-old daughter of Cowboy Cal out of Afternoon Dreams by Afternoon Delights, Cali Dream now has 10 wins, seven seconds and four thirds from 36 starts and earnings of $327,917. She was bred by Robert Gorham and Mast Thoroughbreds LLC and is owned by Jerry Laria.
ACCREDITED-BRED CHAMPION MOBIL SOLUTION
TAKES $75,000 GOVERNOR’S BUCKEYE CUP
2018 Champion 3-year-old and Accredited Mal Champion continues to hold his form In 2009 as he captured a thrilling three-horse photo the 1 1/4-mile Governor’s Buckeye Cup. Mobil Solution settled in second while favored Cake Pop opened up an eight-length lead, clocking the half-mile in :48.04 and the mile in 1:40.22. By the three-eighths pole, the leader was coming back to the field, and Mobil Solution took advantage, leading into the stretch with Over Icce and Verissimo right behind. After an all-out race to the wire, Mobil Solution prevailed by a neck over Verissimo, who was a nose better than Over Icce. Final time was 2:06.86.
Jeff Radosevich trains both the winner and the runner-up. “I love this horse because he’s such a digger,” he said of Mobil Solution. “In the morning he doesn’t give you a lot, but in the afternoon he does give you a lot. He’s a cool horse to be around. I’m proud of him because he’s just one of those work horses.” Mobil Solution was the 5-1 fourth choice and paid $12.60, $6.20 and $4.40.
A multiple stakes winner, the gelded son of 2008 Stallion of the Year Mobil, Mobil Solution has six wins, seven seconds and four thirds from 20 starts and earnings of $349,320 for owner Gerald Silver. He has only been out of the money three times in his career. The 4-year-old gelding was bred by Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm.
